my hair

After I did my Batiste review, I got a couple of questions from Becca at The Beauty Sample about my hair.  I figured it'd be fun to do a hair history -- that way, if I review any hair products in the future, you'll always have this to come back to.

My hair history begins with a very typical, toddler bowl cut.  Unlike most parents who decide on this cut, my parents decided to bring me to a salon and have someone inflict it on me.  If I had any of the baby pictures, I would show you but...it's probably better that I don't.

I'm going to skip over the first decade and  half of my life where I remained under a regime of regular bowl cut oppression, and into a time after puberty when my hair grew out.  I didn't do much with my hair in high school -- I didn't even own a hair straightener!  I pulled my hair back in a pony tail every day and went about my nerdy way.

Then it happened -- I got a perm.  Before you ask, here's how it happened.  I was going to a wedding in Hong Kong, and my cousin suggested we get blowouts.  The hairstylist gave me a few waves with a curling iron and I thought...wouldn't it be great if I woke up and my hair looked like this?

You should know that nothing in life is that easy.  In fact, I'm sure most people know that, it just took me two perms to figure out.  Yes, two.  Back-to-back, no less.

The perm wasn't as bad as the word "perm" conjures -- here's a photo for your viewing pleasure.  The issue was that my hair came out completely fried and damaged, from root to tip.  That is, despite my efforts at deep conditioning, I had to wait until the entire length of my hair -- root to tip-- grew out before it would stop feeling like hay.  The first night I laid down after straightening my hair post-perm, it literally felt like I was sleeping on horsehair.

It was Halloween. Not that I didn't wear fairy wings all the time, under my clothes.

Now my hair is pretty routinely subjected to heat-styling -- I'd say I style twice a month, maybe more in the summer.  In the video you can see my hair colour, texture and length.  I've never dabbled in hair colour, and I hope I won't have to for a few more years (though I do have more than a few greys peeking out).  As for my cut, I've had the same hairstylist since I was five.  I've grown to stop resenting him for the Bowl Cut Era, because he does a fantastic job now. He is also responsible for all of Tod's crazy haircuts that I choose for her.  Check out her Arizona Muse-inspired cut here and her asymmetrical cut here.

Check out the video for all the products I use to keep my hair looking...like it does in the video.  The Youtube info box will also have a full list of products!

  1. I have been dying to try the kerastase elixir ultime, but I also want to try the moroccan oil....have you used both? As for what I'm going to get at sephora tomorrow I might go for the B&B surf spray which I have been also wanting for a while, or maybe stock up on the caudalie beauty elixir, it's my go to facial spray for summer. What are you going to get?!

    1. I haven't tried Moroccan Oil. I tried Macadamia Oil, which I love, but I think I used it for way too long and my hair got used to it. I want to try Moroccan Oil after this though!

I loooove Caudalie Beauty Elixir! I'm a little more than half-done my bottle so maybe I should also stock up...I haven't really decided yet! I was thinking of some REN skincare, but I'm not really hurting for more skin stuff at the moment. Maybe something crazy like the MUFE Flash Colour Palette?

    2. So I ended up getting both the caudalie beauty elixir and the surf spray today! I'm so sad that they were sold out of gift bags by the time I arrived but I really didn't expect anything, there was a line around the corner before the store even opened. I left a reply on my blog to your question about the msfn vs terracotta bronzer, but if you can I would try both!!

    1. I think it was the second perm that really did my hair in =P Chi Silk Infusion is the best! Some people really hate the way it smells, but I actually really like it.

  3. Yay you're awesome--thank you for doing this video!! :) I maintain that your hair is just naturally gorgeous and voluminous but I still am going to have to try some of these products in hopes that it will help my very sad hair in some way :P

  5. Awww I think your perm looks so pretty although I know exactly what you mean about the "straw hair" feel. I remember once in HS I dyed my hair "dark brown" which turned totally black, then desperately tried to rinse out some of the pigment with some baking powder concoction I read about online... no matter what I did, my hair felt felt like a scarecrow's. Luckily after a few weeks, it went back to its normal texture, so I didn't have to wait as long as you... that must've been frustrating!

  7. Loved this post, I always love hair stories because I seem to always want to be trying things with my hair or am unhappy with the texture etc. Questions, where do you get the bumble and bumble spray, the All Revved up spray or the Hair Moisturizer? My hair will not curl no matter what I do to it but I do have a bit of a wave I'd like to define better when I let it air dry and you can't ever go wrong with a little hair moisturizer in my book.

    1. You can order Rev-Up online from the Curly Hair Solutions website http://www.frizzoff.com/ -- there's also a list of salons!
Bumble&Bumble Surf Spray and hair moisturizer (Phyto 7) are available at Sephora, and some specialty hair care stores or salons.

  9. Great post, and agree with Evelyn, your hair always looks lovely in videos, so it's interesting to see what products you use. Really enjoyed the hair history bit too! I've also had a couple perms, but mine looked horrific compared to yours! It does look pretty in the pic, as do the fairy wings :) I know what you mean about the straw hair though, that's exactly how mine felt after the second perm although mine did improve quite a lot after I spent a small fortune on hydrating masks and treatments.

  10. Hi! Great post here! Thank you for the tips that you've been giving us, as well as showing the products that you've been using. My hair is exposed to heat styling once in a while, so I need something to protect it from too much heat.
